It's worth mentioning that my good cyberfriend, the late Clancy Sigal, was the American expatriate who was depicted as her lover in the novel. He doesn't come off well at all. I read "Golden Notebook" about 25 years ago and thought it was okay but it couldn't hold a candle to Clancy's "Going Away", a roman-a-clef about his imminent departure for England where he will hook up with Lessing. Before he goes, he makes a circuit of all his CP friends about what went wrong. When I read it in 1980, just about the time the SWP was going off the deep end, I found it remarkably insightful so much so that I bought 5 copies and sent it to my old friends in the Trotskyist movement.
