Today's New York Times has a very lengthy opinion piece on the issue raised by
Gary and commented on by others. It includes comments from a number of
historians of various political views, including two leftists, Eric Foner and
Greg Gandin. I think it's worth looking at for the variety of perspectives and
opinions.

I think Grandin's opinion is worthy of consideration:

Over the short term. Greg Grandin (
https://history.yale.edu/people/greg-grandin ) , a professor of history at
Yale, sees the Trump challenge petering out, but he argues that the challenge
represents a long-term threat to American governance:

A few decades from now, Grandin wrote in his email, “Trump will be seen as
significant, but really just a minor blip compared to the crisis that lay
ahead.”
