I have to agree with this, albeit reluctantly. The reluctance: the whole idea of sex police makes my flesh creep, even though of course rape and most forms of pedophilia are supreme among the social evils attendant on capitalist decadence besides being the stuff of life to idiocies like the psychotic QAnon. Besides, the intro to every episodes uses the phrase "sexually-based offenses" which I find ridiculous--it makes me think of some dream version of Abbott and Costello--"What base are you on?--I'm on first base--I'm on second base--I'm on sex base."
Despite its burden of the fascist potential of sex hysteria and the cult of police worship, IMO the series does have the virtues attributed to it by M. Meeropol, and--now that COVID has forced my into underfunded retirement at age 72--I find myself watching reruns of the original shows whenever I can. I particularly commend the understated and very effective performance of Ice T as one of the series regulars--a welcome foil to the chronically overboiling Detective Stabler, who gets up my nose as the character is possibly meant to do. Slight digression: I used to be a big fan of the old series Emergency! which--despite emerging from a deeply reactionary source--per moi presented a uniquely positive image of working class characters as intelligent, articulate, and fully exercising agency in the interests of society.
