for this corrective to Max Ajl's pan of Andreas Malm's book:
If you were thinking of reading Andreas Malm's new short book Corona,
Climate, Chronic Emergency but reading Max Ajl's review changed your
mind: do reconsider. It's not that the book is without weaknesses (I
think the central argument about the need for mass movements to force
capitalist states to implement climate justice reforms, against the
opposition of capital, is essential, but disagree on some other points).
There are ideas in it worth debating among supporters of climate
justice, some of which Ajl identifies. But Ajl is wrong to claim that
Malm thinks peasant and indigenous people's movements are unimportant,
and he seems to forget that the book was written in haste and finished
at the end of April. Ajl's claim that "it has been outside Western
Europe and the United States that Leninism has taken root on a mass
basis" reveals his belief that Stalinism is authentic Leninism. Malm's
pointing to the tradition of anti-Stalinist Marxism as a vital resource
for the ecosocialism we need has a lot more to offer than Ajl's apparent
sympathy for Maoism. I expect Ajl's book due out next year will be worth
reading too, but do read Malm's little book.
