The relations of John Brown and his band with the native peoples is a touchstone of my _Race and Radicalism in the Union Army_. Socialists and radical land reformers such as Augustus Wattles, Richard J. Hinton. and William A. Phillips became key figures in the effort to recruit Indian soldiers to the Unionist cause, alongside black volunteers. The first African American soldiers to fight actually did so as members of the Indian Home Guard.
Importantly, they not only had to fight the secessionists but the rampant corruption within the Federal government by officials who built personal fortunes out plundering the Indians. -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- Groups.io Links: You receive all messages sent to this group.
