This was an act of stupidity which reflects the undeveloped fervor of some anarchists. Any and every public action or protest is first and foremost, theater, outreach and education. They made themselves a public enemy and enemies of the left. A theory of mine which I have tried to explain to similar young activists is that of being either revolutionary in form or revolutionary in function. The first, sloganeering, banner-waving and radical looking actions feels great, cathartic, attracts like minds and scares everyone else away. It looks revolutionary but can actually be counter-revolutionary unless we are on the brink of a popular uprising. The second, revolutionary in form, hard work, takes organized discipline, doesn't look revolutionary at all or necessarily provide momentary catharsis but actually brings people in, changes minds and attracts broad support. This can be done through articles, pamphlets, demonstrations, poetry and song and by Lenin's dictum to *carefully explain* reaching out and educating from where people are at. Such efforts can progress to mass demonstrations, demands and revolution. Breaking windows or initiating violence is infantile and counter-revolutionary.
