nice review, Louis --- what you write at the end about us in the 1960s
having "actually existing socialism" to compare to the US is actually a
potential double-edged sword.   I remember Paul Baran in a letter to Sweezy
saying that after travelling in Eastern Europe, the only thing that would
revive his belief in socialism is to see capitalism in action in the US ---
In other words, having examples of "actually existing socialism" that one
on the left has to DEFEND all the time can actually debilitate a movement
---

Today, on the other hand --- all we have is the world wide capitalism that
is quickly destroying the entire planet --- I think it's better to imagine
than to be anchored to a system that calls itself socialist but definitely
isn't ...
