I am not surprised that Patterson proved damaged beyond repair by his life
in Atamore and then Kilby prison between 1931 and 1948 --- I read
Scotsboro Boy back in the 50s and was shocked (as a sheltered middle class
New Yorker in my teens) by the violence within the prisons where Patterson
"grew up" --- unbelievably sad ....We are full of admiration for those who
spend years in prison and come out "whole" but I bet a lot more come out
like Patterson did ...
