The Wheelers are a great family of Reds. Tim was, as many of you know, editor
of the Peoples World for many years. As for remembering our working class
heroes, Tim wrote a poem I published back in 1990 on the death of George Meyers
( https://www.baltimoresun.com/news/bs-xpm-1999-10-21-9910210183-story.html )
who at that time was Labor Secretary of the CPUSA and a close friend and
inspiration of mine. the poem:

*The View From Dan's Mountain*

In Memory of George A. Meyers, 1913-1999

>From Dan's Mountain, this October

afternoon,

Appalachia reaches a hundred miles.

Leaves are falling, brown, red, yellow

and russet.

A glory lies upon the golden earth.

You stood on this summit. These were

your mountains. You endured like

ice age rocks, the time of trial,

prison, blacklists. You looked

out from here into the heartland

and felt like a fresh wind the

workers rising.

The old century passes of famine, war,

and greed. Yet spring will come again.

These mountainsides will thaw.

The laurel will bloom. The land

will tremble with hope

like a tottering newborn calf.

Native son of Lanaconing, the passion

of your Irish mother, the courage of

your

coal miner father pulsed in your brave

heart.

You loved the miners, the mill workers,

the farmers

In the power of their hand and brain is

the

destiny of the world.

They who forge

the iron wheels and make them turn

will take back what is theirs.

The mine owners stripped the land,

blackened the miner's lungs with dust,

broke their strikes and walked away

when the coal ran out.

The people who dwell on George's

Creek

did not walk away. The bells of Saint

Mary toll for you. Your sister lights

a candle

against the dark.

Your ashes are scattered here

and mingle with the rotting leaves.

This is your earth. The struggle

you started here, we will finish.

The songs you sang here,

we will sing.

We hear your voice on the mountaintop

in the rising winter wind.
