Hallo Michael: It is certainly interesting to see someone like Standing grapple with the way in which society has changed (or not). However - if he was truly an adviser to the last Labour pathetic 'attempt' to gain control in the last election (something I took issue with here: 'A Thrown Election" at http://ml-today.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/12/british-elections-2019.pdf ) it seems to me, little surprise that Labour lost. Does it not seem that his central mission is to disembowel the notion of a fundamental division between the working class and the ruling class? He says:" “Very briefly, we should define classes by three dimensions – distinctive relations of production, distinctive relations of distribution and distinctive relations to the state. It is essential to define classes in this multi-dimensional way in order to escape both from the old pseudo-Marxist dualism of the bourgeoisie versus the proletariat (or worse, working class) and the phoney dualism of crude populism of ‘the people’ versus ‘the elite’ (or establishment).” This is blandly stated as the starting ground. Is this all true Michael? Of the three ‘essential’ points, it seems that the first (“to escape both from the old pseudo-Marxist dualism of the bourgeoisie versus the proletariat (or worse, working class.”) is not a given. I confess I am not tempted to purchase his book to evaluate him at a deeper level. But I respect your views, so what am I missing here? Best Wishes, Hari Kumar.
