Re: [marxmail] Open Letter on Syria and the “anti-imperialism of fools”

Since the letter was first published in New Politics and al-Jumhuriya
several days ago, the list of signatures has nearly doubled. Some are
saying the letter could have been written better etc. Obviously, we will
all have our particular ideas, but this statement was put together over
several weeks by a range of people with varying political views (all
broadly within the 'progressive' arena but by no means all socialists). I
believe we did well and the letter reads well. For me, I find I have no
issues at all with anything in the letter.
However, it is a valid critique that on the anniversary of the revolution
it may have concentrated more on the revolution itself, particularly the
radical experimentation with democracy from below in the first few years,
to remind people of its liberatory essence - rather than a statement
attacking our BS "anti-imperialist" opponents. Something like that would be
a very good statement of course. But that would be a different statement.
The issue here is not so much our dispute with the left/far-right coalition
of western Asadists itself, but the erasure of Syrian voices, of Syrian
people, in the debate. I think the essence of the letter is the last 3
paragraphs.
