‘Created by the poor, stolen by the rich’: United fans protest about Super
League outside Old Trafford
---

Gramscians and those who are interested in sports sociology in general and
football specifically, are taking notes at the now failed scheme by
Europe's richest clubs to scuttle the concept of relegation. This was led
in the English league by the Yank owners of Manchester United, Arsenal, and
Liverpool, who see no value in sporting competition as reflected in this
anonymous quote that was leaked, "Our primary job is to maximize our
revenues and profits. The wider good of the game is a secondary concern."
(Some of the background is covered by sports sociologist and author, David
Goldblatt) This led to an uproar by nearly everyone from supporters to
Boris Johnson that had the project in tatters within 24 hours.

Whether or not it was a tactical move that succeeded or backfired in UEFA
negotiations in the Champion’s league, it has had substantial financial
impact. As a quote from Bloomberg (I couldn’t access the whole article),
“it’s always risky funding a revolution.”

The yanks seem to have overplayed their hand in using the pandemic as a
justification for getting rid of the competitive aspect of world football
that the States has no understanding of the concept and is viewed with
contempt by the Glazers, the Henrys and the Kroenkes of the global stage of
sport. I think they thought the market in Asia (China, especially), India,
and Africa would supplement the bulk of viewers and that the supporters
were more like Americans and would swallow it without much pushback.
