So-called moderate Democrats have always made a big deal out of trolling their concern that what America needs is better Republicans. Ages ago they used to wax misty-eyed over the old Bob Taft. Now it's Reagan, Nixon, and Goldwater--monsters all.
It does look as if the Dems will get pwned in the next election. They used to want it that way; now they just can't control their bizarre masochism and there's no pretense of an overarching rationale. Biden and co. will succeed only if they initiate a far-reaching political campaign for the so-called New Dealish elements of Biden's program. Instead, they're backing off--making use of Manchin, defending Trump in court, emitting renewed signals of good old neoliberal compromise. I will be royally surprised if this works politically--its likely failure would in any case be a calamity for the US and maybe the world. The DP could spread its inevitable naufrage over a relatively long period, failing because, although they are full of shit and have the lie in their shriveled little souls, they are astute enough politicians to keep the "liberal" ball in the air for some appreciable period. This would also be a calamity, but maybe later on down the road, buying time for the left to actually come to be in the US. But that would take an all-out political offensive promoting a clear party line, advertising that, rallying for it.The DP is incapable of that. Now instead they may be recapitulating the worst errors of Obamaism--per which nothing matters but the bizarre pleasure of seeing the reactionary Merrick Garland promoted to the effective stature of "good Republican." This and the accompanying strategic blunders could lead to the collapse of our so-called democracy in very short order--a significantly bigger catastrophe than the foregoing. This would really put the screws to any remnant of the broad front left that looked like emerging for a brief moment during the George Floyd ferment, but which now seems to have lost its mass character. -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- Groups.io Links: You receive all messages sent to this group.
