What happened? In a word, neoliberalism. As is to be expected from the Old Grey Lady, what is notoriously missing from this piece is any mention of the effects of the 40+ year counter-revolution of neoliberalism, and the devestatating effects this has had on American politics and society. You can criticize boomers all you want for abandoning the ideals of the sixties, but the younger generations of leaders that have been offered up in the last couple of decades are every bit as reactionary, and just as lacking in revolutionary spirit, as any boomer, if not moreso, because they are from the generations that came of age after Reagan.
Fifty, sixty years ago, pretty much the entire membership of "The Squad" would be looked upon as the spineless moderates they truly are. Especially when compared to the likes of Mike Gravel, Thomas Eagleton,and any others you could name from this period. I think that was because of the generation men like this were born into.
