A footnote to my last comment:

For those like myself who passed through the Trotskyist movement, Charlie’s
certainty, with its hint of a welcome, that " the contradiction between Chinese
and U.S. monopoly capitalism will become more antagonistic” reminds me of
nothing so much as the old FI tendency headed by Juan Posadas. Posadas forecast
that the deepemg antagonism between the US and USSR would lead to nuclear war -
not something to welcomed, of course, but out of whose rubble would finally
arise the global socialist commonwealth.

His benign view of the sharpening of contradictions between great powers in a
nuclear age gained little support within the movement, and none outside of it
where the more politically conscious among the masses turned instead to
building peace movements of the kind  dismissed by Charlie as “preaching
accomodation” rather than “revolution as the only way out”.
