Hi John:
1. There are to me, some problems of your counsel that those supporting
Palestine should simply keep quiet on these questions. Obviously it is the
Palestinians who will at some stage pass their own judgment on the Hamas. And
that will trump others. But even before the October assault came, they had
already passed such as in the prior referendums and surveys.
You say that the other factions of the Palestinians are fighting alongside the
remaining Hamas fighters. What else happens under a war - by and large? But
that does not take away the prior ill-fit within the movement:
“Besides Hamas and Palestinian Islamic Jihad, no significant Palestinian
faction, popular movement, or potential successor espouses ‘armed struggle’
today or calls for its return.” (Hussein 2021 At: point 49;

I do not think that accepting their "self-definition" as you do ("Hamas
currently (since the 2017 Charter at least) define themselves as a nationalist
movement despite their obvious religious commitment."). The Palestine movement
was from early on full of self-proclaiming and self-defining movements whose
ties to foreign states revealed other agendas.
2. Recall that Hamas was - by the accounts of many Israeli state actors - a
"creature" of Israel:
"“Hamas, to my great regret, is Israel’s creation,” Avner Cohen, a former
Israeli religious affairs official who worked in Gaza for more than two
decades, told the Wall Street Journal in 2009. Back in the mid-1980s, Cohen
even wrote an official report to his superiors warning them not to play
divide-and-rule in the Occupied Territories, by backing Palestinian Islamists
against Palestinian secularists. “I … suggest focusing our efforts on finding
ways to break up this monster before this reality jumps in our face,” he wrote.
Point 46 in.

Also there is what we have forgotten about already, even though at the start of
the war, this below was widely reported: "Netanyahu was quite explicit about
his general strategy:
“Anyone who wants to thwart the establishment of a Palestinian state has to
support bolstering Hamas and transferring money to Hamas,” he told a meeting of
his Likud party’s Knesset members in March 2019.“This is part of our strategy –
to isolate the Palestinians in Gaza from the Palestinians in the West Bank.”
Gidi Weitz. (Oct. 9, 2023). “Another Concept Implodes: Israel Can’t Be Managed
by a Criminal Defendant.” Haaretz."
Ibid Point 46 ).
3. When the IRA was losing public support in the days of 'The troubles' - it
was correct to attack the British army as an imperialist arm that was wreaking
indiscriminate terror on civilians. At the same time the anti-civilian attacks
of the IRA were also leading to their own isolation and ostracism from many of
the Irish people.
I do not think a policy of abstaining verdicts on the individual terror tactics
is sensible for the left. At the same time exposing lies of the Israeli cabinet
whose long term strategy of their wisdom of supporting Hamas has given them
such short-term gains.
