Unlike Noah Smith, we don't support unregulated trade, right? US autoworkers don't want to see the collapse of the domestic car industry and neither do we. It's a presidential election year and the President has saved these actions for the election year, just like the prosecution of Donald Trump.
I wouldn't pick on EVs even though it's the most upsetting to US neoliberals and New Democrats. It's the Ohio chip plant and the $8B gift to Intel that's been in place for years that are key to US munitions production. Note that Intel acquired the particular chip design (ARM) almost 30 years ago and could not produce ARM chips profitably together with its Intel architecture (IA) PC chip manufacturing. IA starved the internal ARM business of capital while customers would not buy their ARM chips from Intel because, among other things, customers did not trust Intel to meet demand for the ARM chips when demand was high for IA microprocessors. Intel founder Gordon Moore once said that the Pentium (the IA chip product of the 90's) was like the creosote bush of the desert that emits a poison to kill everything growing around it in competition for water. Intel's IA business poisoned its ARM business to maximize profits on IA products. So the US taxpayers are bribing them to do it. None of this is an argument in support of the war the US government is dragging us into with the China-Russia bloc. But there are US jobs at stake, it's a presidential election year, and I support the EV tariffs, particularly as the UAW is aggressively organizing southern US car plants.
