First impressions about Labour's victory. Any party led by someone whose name is "Sir Keir..." is not a working class party. The Labour Party, always a pro-imperialist party, was a working class party based on the UKs unions until those ties were cut (I believe by the infamous Sir Tony Blair). Now the Labour Party is closer to what the imperialist Democratic Party is in the United States.
Labour's victory was mostly due to a collapse of the Conservative Party and Scottish National Party vote rather than a big increase in Labour's vote. (see the article at the link below). Labour only got about 34% of the total votes. The Tories great loss was a massive rejection of their decades long austerity drive and attack on the British working class, but also a rejection of Brexit as a massive failure. Labour will continue the austerity, albeit in a new form. They will likely continue Sunak's foreign policy on every count, but with some small adjustments including moving closer to the EU on military issues. Even though Labour's vote total was anemic compared to the number of seats in Parliament it won, this election did see a big increase in the vote for the left, partly reflected in the vote for Labour, but mostly reflected in the vote for independent, let, pro-Palestinian candidates in 5 contests, and the good showing of similar candidates in many others. Jeremy Corbyn was one of those independent candidates who won. The Green Party also gained seats, but I know very little about this party in the UK. sinn Fein is also apparently now the largest party in Northern Ireland. Significantly, George Galloway, the pro-Assad and Pro Putin leader of the Workers Party, has lost his seat. All of the hype in the bourgeois media about the Reform Party and its leader Nigel Farage was overblown, but they did get 14% of the vote even though they only won four seats in parliament. I think their vote share reflects the really reactionary racist anit-immigrant sentiment that exists within the UKs ancient imperialist petty bourgeoisie. https://www.opendemocracy.net/en/election-results-starmer-labour-win-mean-for-left-independent-candidates-green/ -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- Groups.io Links: You receive all messages sent to this group.
