[Edited Message Follows] [Reason: Editorial changes,] The Teamsters’ Sean (as in O’Brien) makes the UAW’s Shawn (as in Fain) look like Big Bill Haywood by comparison. O’Brien, it will be recalled, won the Teamsters’ presidency in 2021 with the support of the Teamsters for a Democratic Union against the candidate favoured by the pro-Hoffa establishment faction. The TDU and the union’s black caucus and many within the union ranks and leadership have since denounced O'Brien for visiting Trump in January and for agreeing to speak at this weekend’s Republican convention.
Apart from the maverick O’Brien, no other national union leader has made a similar move towards the Republicans, although Trump is gaining ground among many of their members. They blame Biden and the Democrats rather than corporate capitalism for the inflated cost of housing, food, education, and other essentials which is eroding their real wages.
