Hi, Hari! I will reply briefly since this information is publicly available.
1.The Houthis are a petty-bourgeois nationalist and Islamist movement (Shia, albeit the Zaydī current in contrast to the Twelver which is dominant in Iran and among Shia in general). They emerged in the 1990s. They supported the Revolution in 2011 and skilfully utilised another popular uprising in 2014 which brought them to power. Since then, they control most of the populated areas. From this strength they get their financial resources.
2.They also made a pragmatic alliance with Saleh in 2014 (which later broke up) but this gave them access to much of the army’s military arsenal (incl. many missiles).
3.They defended successfully the country against the invasion of Saudi Arabia and UAE in 2015.
4.They have an alliance with Iran from where they also receive modern weapons.
5.However, it would be silly to believe that they are simply a proxy of Iran. The Palestine cause is extremely popular in Yemen and has helped the Houthis to massively increase their popularity. There are pro-Palestine mobilisations in all parts of the country, including those under control of their opponents. It also helped to rebuild links with sectors of their former enemies (e.g. Al-Islah)
