People seem to be ignoring what will be on the line should Trump become president.  We can look forward to significant harm to the LGBTQ community, including a dismantling of federal protections and gay marriage, cuts to the ACA, Medicare and Social Security and a very unfavorable stance vs. unions.  Environmental protections will be further gutted, and tax breaks for the wealthy will become even larger.  Our deficit will balloon for no good reason.  We should also remember that other minority groups also have a vested interest in ensuring Trump does not make it to the White House.

Meanwhile, Jill Stein has never run for any public office other than president.  How do we know she’s even competent enough to handle the job?  Why should she be given the job if she is unwilling to run as a U.S. representative or senator?  Kamala Harris has been a DA, a senator and a vice-president.  She has plenty of ability to handle her job and supports our current cluster of social and environmental programs.

I realize many of you want Stein to be president because you dislike Trump and Harris, but we all know that’s just a fairy tale given Stein’s 1-2% support.  Until she polls at 33%, a vote for her is a vote for Trump, and we’ll all be worse for the wear because of it.   Some of you may not be old enough to remember the 2020 election, but I cringe when I think of how Gore lost by an only a handful of votes that would have come his way had Nader not run.  Clinton would have won in 2016 had Stein not run.  It is a luxury to throw away your vote, because you may not be able to feel the difference between a Democrat and a Republican.  Those of us who are disabled, LGBTQ, poor, or of color are devastated every time a Republican wins.  For Leftists to turn their backs on us would be unforgivable.

I really hesitated to pitchin into this again, because it's like arguing with someone coming to the door with a Bible or the Book of Mormon trying to save your soul.  Still . . .

Come election day, residents of most states will already know how their states are going to vote.  Illinois will go Democratic.  Casting a vote for Harris (or Trump) is simply a throwaway.  A few percentage points going for West or Stein will demand some sort of attention to the issues we all agree are ignored by the duopoly.  In such a place--or in a state like Kansas that's going to go for the Orange One--casting a vote for Harris is pointless except in some metaphysical embrace of the ghost of FDR.

The West campaign has apparently crashed and burned. I've made no secret of the problems I have with the Green non-party but don't think there's any alternative. I will do so and plan on sending the campaign some money shortly.  I would urge others to do the same, particularly those in this or similar states who don't want to cast an entirely pointless ballot.

Cheers,
Mark L.
