[not on the thread topic] Avram, please prove that Mark B supports the "permanent colonization of Ukraine by Russia"? Even Ukrainians don't support that. Having said that it would be a very political stunt if the AFU announced they are going to hold a referendum there (with a 98% approval vote of course!) to announce the citizens of Kursk want to join Ukraine! That would be great! Such "faux-referendums" are part and parcel of Russian's colonization/annexation program in eastern Ukraine.
The AFU seems to continue their expansion into Kursk. The RF have built a long West/East trench right south of the main hwy connection the northern part of Kursk but south of the city (cities) along that highway. This huge embarrassment for Putin changes the military calculus some...it is hard to see how this will actually help Ukraine in the east unless very large numbers of troops move from the front-lines there to Kursk. There is already evidence, provided by Russian military bloggers that this is the case. We will see if this makes a difference. The RF continue to make gains in the east of occupied Ukraine. I will say one thing. Contrary to all the military opiners out there, this is only partially an intelligence failure on part of the Russians. The Russians knew that the AFU were staging troops 15 miles to the south of the Kursk border. There is no disputing this anymore. However...the very understandable thought process given the massive number of Russian incursions into Ukraine in this area, was these troops were positioned as blocking brigades to confront any Russian attacks. That is entirely reasonable. They couldn't of known that just the opposite was occurring, that the AFU were staging an incursion. The troops were told 3 days ahead of time what the plan was by any failure was here: no AFU symps of the Russians reported this to them. Thus, a complete surprise.
