The Democratic National Convention, now rebranded as the DNC, is a very, very interesting event. It is not a party convention to conduct party business. There is NO business being conducted. NO proposals being made and debated, nothing of the sort. All of the real business is being cooked behind closed doors. The participants in those meeting may not be fat old white men smoking cigars, but the principles of back room politics are the same. The event itself is a gigantic TV/online campaign rally studded with stars and produced with the best Hollywood talent. The speeches and chants are well written, well thought out, tug on heart strings, and avoid anything that might cause a problem - like Gaza.
They Democrats are talking left, as left as they can. but anyone who reads their platform can see, that they are moving right in important ways, and not just on policing and immigration. They are moving right on foreign policy, too. Still, they are not just moving right. They are moving in at least two other ways at the same time. Now they are campaigning to win the White House, but not just the White House. They are openly saying and acting as if they want to win the trifecta of the House, the Senate, and the White House. More than that, they are talking about changing the most sacrosanct, holy of holies, the Supreme Court. Since the age of Reagan, the Democrats ahve been the party of bipartisanship. What has changed? The GOP abandoned them. Despite Nancy Pelosi's heartfelt desire to save the Republicans from themselves, the GOP has deserted the bipartisan ship. In other words, the Democrats are coming to grips with the possibility of moving from a two party system to a one party system, and are concluding that if it must happen, then they must be the one party. And if they are, they have to promise something to the real working class of America: the majority woman and young and black and immigrant working class. And, if they do, they will have to make good on at least some part of their promises. The Democrats are talking about subsidizing new home purchases and price freezes. They are talking about prosecuting billionaire scam artists. And they are sucking the left into the wake of their shift as the small size of the demonstrations in Chicago show. And they are making sure that Israel and Gaza are not on everyone's lips.
