I don’t have a problem with seeing the Chinese system as a more advanced state-directed form of capitalism, other than that the 19th century unfettered Western model was seen as its end stage. If the PRC and its supporters claim the same features instead represent a very early stage of “socialism with Chinese characteristics”, the debate seems mostly semantic. Whether they characterize it as "capitalist" or "socialist", the Chinese single-party rather than the bourgeois democratic model is more appealing to many in the global south who credit it for the PRC's dramatic rise. There is in that sense an ideological dimension to the conflict, although not as pronounced as when the USSR supported parties programatically dedicated to the overthrow of capitalism.
