Trotsky wrote in the 1926 faction fight that the Stalin faction was using an old anti-Semitic slogan - "Beat the Jews and save Russia" with a new twist - "Beat the Opposition and save Russia!" Everyone who had a memory of the old slogan understood the meaning of the second, since the Left Opposition was led by Trotsky, Zinoviev, and Kamenev, all from Jewish backgrounds. He also pointed out that the Stalinists referred to the Opposition leaders by their birth names - Bronstein, Radomyslsky and Rozenfeld, which had no political significance.
