Long before dialectical materialism "emerged in the Soviet Union after years of debate," the first chapter of Materialism and Empirio-Criticism (1908) was titled "The Theory of Knowledge of Empirio-Criticism and of *Dialectical Materialism*." And yes, it developed in "debate and political struggle" between the Bolsheviks and the capitulators to the years of reaction like Bogdanov.
