Dear Friends and Comrades,

Today we share our latest issue, Resistance – The Axis and Beyond. Issue 313 provides a kaleidoscopic perspective on resistance to Israel’s genocidal campaign in Gaza since October 7, 2023. Since Hizballah’s ceasefire and the stunning ouster of Bashar al-Asad in Syria in December, the Axis of Resistance has appeared weaker than ever. We start this issue with an essay from Kevin Schwartz cautioning those who have proclaimed the demise of the Axis.

Our contributors go on to provide insight on Yemen’s Ansar Allah, an update to our Primer on Lebanon, released last fall, and analyses of Iran’s strategic support of Palestine and the centrality of the concept of “the oppressed” (mostazafin) to the ideology of the Islamic Republic. We also look beyond the central members of the Axis of Resistance to examine how the Red Sea blockade has impacted the garment industry in Jordan, how the energy sector has been both a site of domination and resistance in Palestine and a reflection on the power of the Arab resistance theater in the context of campus protests. The cover art offers its own interpretation of the theme of resistance, by Palestinian-American artist Samar Hussaini.

In addition to these perspectives, this issue includes a dispatch from South Lebanon in the wake of Israel’s invasion in October and Samer Abboud’s special report on the role of data driven technology in humanitarianism across the region that we released last week as a preview.

This issue is also the first since the passing of our founding co-editor, Joe Stork. We’ve included here a powerful obituary from Judith Tucker, who has been with MERIP since the early days. If you are new to us and Joe’s work, you can also check out this overview of his writing for Middle East Report, spanning more than 25 years, that we published after his passing.

We hope you find this issue engaging–please let us know what you think! And stay tuned for an announcement about our issue launch event coming very soon!

In solidarity,

James Ryan
Executive Director
