Well, here is the debate: Is Russia's invasion of Ukraine to recreate the
Russian Empire not a form of imperialism? Is that imperial camp somehow better
than the far more powerful and lethal US imperial camp? Or should we debate
capital outflows and Lenin's work on imperialism? It is hard to argue that
Russia was any more than a Potemkin imperial power before the invasion, which
exposed it to be third-tier petro-state. But it is much larger than Ukraine,
Finland, Lithuania, Poland and the front-line states who oppose their historic
invader and occupier from returning.
My support for Ukraine is rooted in solidarity with the invaded people who
overwhelmingly fought the invader. We have had Ukrainian workers and labor
leaders who have posted to this list, and not one of them supported the Russian
invasion or advocated laying down arms. No doubt some do. But attacking Ukraine
for violating war resisters' rights while ignoring the far more egregious
anti-democratic repression in Russia is nothing more than Russian propaganda,
which has been prominent in the pages of WSWS for that past three years.
