UJ confers honorary degree on British sociologist, Prof Michael Burawoy*Michael Burawoy*passed away abruptly on February 3, 2025.

The International Sociological Association (ISA) mourns one of its most influential and inspiring presidents, a remarkable and creative global sociologist, an advocate for a public sociology relevant to the people and civil society, an inspiring teacher who trained generations of sociologists, and an extraordinary human being.

A Professor of Sociology at UC Berkeley, his work exemplifies how rigorous empirical research can inform and enrich theoretical debates, and vice versa. By integrating local, national, and global perspectives, he has offered comprehensive analyses that resonate across disciplines and inform public and policy discussions.

Michael was our compass when it came to reminding us why sociology matters in our times and why it is worth devoting so much time and energy to doing and teaching sociology: “Sociology helps students understand how society is collective, the role of race, of class, of gender. Sociology is the scientific study of inequality and the oppression this entails. Sociology studies the very exclusions promoted by the conservative forces. But we study exclusions not to advance them but to recognize and publicize them, and to better understand how they can be contested and reversed.” (in Miami, March 10, 2024).

Michael left us at a time when we most needed his leadership, his energy, his tireless work to help us understand our world, his example as an extraordinary teacher, his faith in relevant public sociology, his openness to a truly global dialogue, his in-depth and rigorous sociological analyses based on months of ethnographic fieldwork working in factories, his quest for social and epistemological justice, his indefatigable struggle for peace and justice in Palestine and in other parts of the world, and his unique energy, commitment and enthusiasm.

Michael's leadership, commitment and passion leave a profound mark on the ISA and the global sociological community. As the *founder of /Global Dialogue/ <https://s5rrw.mjt.lu/lnk/AWUAAGH00QAAAc4gEqIAA7SfFPwAAYKIP5cAoFAlACpgogBnpMrU3YiCO6MKSb68wJZhE3aUbgAnNWg/2/IZrA2w4E6Jwu62WHZ68l-w/aHR0cHM6Ly9nbG9iYWxkaWFsb2d1ZS5pc2Etc29jaW9sb2d5Lm9yZy8>, ISA's online magazine*, he sought “to foster international debate and discussion on contemporary issues through a sociological lens”. As ISA Vice-President for National Associations (2006-2010) and then ISA President (2010-2014), he travelled the world to share his enthusiasm for the relevance of critical and public sociology in our times. He inspired thousands of sociologists with his analyses and convictions and touched them with his kindness, generosity and integrity.

He leaves a global community of sociologists in a sudden mourning and faces a huge void. The ISA invites the global community of sociologists, scholars and social actors to *an online tribute to celebrate his life and legacy* on *Saturday, February 8, at 9 am in Berkeley, 12 noon in New York, 5 pm in Manchester, 6 pm in Paris, 7 pm in Zambia, 10:30 pm in India*. *Further tributes*will be organized during the ISA Executive Committee Meeting in Johannesburg in March and during the *ISA World Forum of Sociology* (July 7-11) in Rabat, Morocco, in addition to initiatives that will be taken by our Research Committees, Working Groups, and Thematic Groups.

Michael Burawoy's contributions will continue to shape how sociologists understand and engage with the world. Michael has not only left us a celebrated work. He also dedicated his energy to building spaces and tools to bring sociologists together, the ISA being one of them. Only together may we live up to maintaining and developing his legacy, animated by the firm conviction that sociology matters in these challenging times.

*UJ confers honorary degree on British sociologist, Prof Michael Burawoy*

Department of Sociology, Faculties, Faculty of Humanities, News, Professional Inauguration, Sociology

The University of Johannesburg (UJ) is awarding an honorary doctorate on British scholar and renowned sociologist, Professor Michael Burawoy, a renowned intellectual and one of the most influential sociologists of the present era, during this year’s second graduation series

UJ’s Faculty of Humanities is conferring the honorary doctoral degree, Doctor Honoris Causa (Sociology) for making considerable theoretical and methodological contributions to the development of Sociology. This honorary degree is in recognition of the profound impact his contributions made today. The virtual conferral is scheduled to take on Monday, 16 May 2022.

This is the first honorary degree for Prof Burawoy.

“That is special. But it is especially gratifying to be receiving it form such a distinguished South African university – the University of Johannesburg. I say this because my future academic career congealed in South Africa in 1966. South Africa opened my eyes to the mysteries of Apartheid and later to many worlds of oppression and struggle,” said Prof Burawoy in a recorded acceptance speech.

In the mid-60s, while a student at Cambridge University, Prof Burawoy hitch-hiked through Africa. He returned to South Africa in 1968 after graduating and became a journalist for six months. He then moved to Zambia, where he worked as a research officer in the copper industry. He embarked on a sociological study of the mining industry, attempting to understand the impact of independence on the transformation of social relations in the copper industry, which ultimately culminated in an MA degree from the University of Zambia in 1972. He has maintained his engagement with South African scholars over many years. In 2001 he was appointed as an Honorary Associate of the Sociology of Work Unit at Wits University. In 2003 he first revealed his dynamic conception of public sociology during a keynote address at the SASA Annual Congress in Durban. In 2010, he presented a series of lectures at Wits structured as conversations between Bourdieu and Marx, with a particular focus on extending the conversational mode to one between Northern and Southern theory. These conversations appeared as a book with the title: Conversations with Bourdieu – The Johannesburg moment.

Says Prof Kammila Naidoo, the Executive Dean of the Faculty of Humanities, and Professor in the Department of Sociology at UJ: “Prof Burawoy has pioneered a path that few have taken. Over the course of four decades of research and teaching, he has developed the extended case method that allows broad conclusions to be drawn from ethnographic research. His ground-breaking public sociology has inspired critical debates and reflective arguments about social relations in the future. UJ with its emphasis on ‘Imagining the Future‘ honours Prof Burawoy who cajoled us, and inspired us, to not only think about the future, but to work actively to build it.”

Prof Burawoy concluded: “I’ve always found South African sociology way ahead of the rest because of its deep engagement with the world around. It is at the vanguard of what I call ‘public sociology’, especially at UJ. It is therefore with exceptional delight and gratitude that I accept this honour you have generously bestowed upon me.”

OAKLAND — A 77-year-old UC Berkeley professor died Monday in what police said was a hit-and-run crash at an intersection.

Authorities identified the pedestrian as Michael Burawoy, of Oakland. He is listed as a professor in the UC Berkeley sociology department and was a well-known British sociologist.

Police said they were continuing to search for the driver of the dark-colored SUV that hit him.

According to police, the crash happened about 7:10 p.m. as Burawoy walked inside a marked crosswalk at the intersection of Grand Avenue and Park View Terrace.

The SUV was going west on Grand Avenue and hit Burawoy with enough force that police said he flew about 75 feet in the air before landing. Medics treated him at the scene for injuries that included more than one skull fracture and rushed him to a hospital.

Doctors pronounced him dead shortly after 8 p.m.

Police did not have a detailed description of the SUV or the driver behind the wheel. Police said it is not known at this point of the investigation whether drugs or alcohol were factors.

Those with information can help Oakland police by contacting traffic investigators at 510-777-8570.
