One reason for the comparative quiet in the streets: many who protest act from 
the concept that the U.S. republic, the state, is a platform, even if tilted, 
on which different interests and sectors contend and which must come to some 
kind of settlement. A corollary is that even if you have no allegiance to the 
Democratic party, it can be moved.

Musk and Trump make it clear that this notion of the state is in the garbage 
can (if it was ever on the table).
