Doing a search for where the psychotherapist Carl Rogers said "This risk of being changed is one of the most frightening prospects most of us can face" "AI Overview popped in and told me that it was Jordan Peterson who said it and gave it's source as Reason , the libertarian rag. Sure enough Reason had incorrectly attributed the quote to Jordan Peterson. In fact, Peterson had correctly credited Rogers for the sentiment. Odd that an allegedly "Large" Language Model would stop at the first instance it found of an attribution and not follow up with a scan of Peterson's text itself. I have had the same experience with a quote from The Naked and the Dead being misattributed as from The Caine Mutiny and one other that I can't recall offhand.
It looks like the "overview" of the Rogers quote was influence by the search returns, which in turn have nothing to do with the authenticity of an attribution but are governed by the mysterious algorithm. In otherwords, even without it, the Google search would give me a full page of misinformation about the quote. So the AI is repeating the misinformation of the search which amplies the misinformation of the Reason article. Carl Rogers, incidentally, is one of the post-Freudians that Russell Jacoby criticized in Social Amnesia. The quote comes from "Communication: Its Blocking and its Facilitation" (1952).
