Schumpeter himself was very right-wing politically. His private correspondence
was full of anti-FDR invective. During the Second World War, he came under FBI
scrutiny as a possible Nazi sympathizer. And in some of his correspondence he
did express some sympathy for Hitler. On the other hand, he did have some very
left-wing doctoral students and teaching assistants like Sweezy and Minsky. The
neo-Keynesian Paul Samuelson was another one of his students. He went to bat
for both Sweezy and Samuelson when they were up for tenure at Harvard. To
Schumpeter's consternation, neither man got tenure there. Samuelson probably
did not get tenure because he was Jewish, while Sweezy did not get it because
he was a red. Samuelson was able to decamp across the river at MIT, where he
would soon become the department chair, in which capacity he was able to build
that into a world class economics department. Sweezy, on the other hand, was
never able to get tenure anywhere, although over the years he did have a number
of visiting professorships. As late as the 1960s, it was the case that Sweezy's
friend Paul Baran would be the only tenured Marxist economics professor in the
US. And Baran would face a serious attempt by wealthy right-wing alumni to oust
him from his professorship at Stanford. That attempt failed but the stress from
that likely caused his premature death.
