Thanks for posting this, John. He was an inspiration to me during my late teens. I remember when he was arrested as H. Rap Brown in 1971, before his conversion to Islam. I was living in Camden, New Jersey where I sampled the leftwing newspapers sold on Market Street in downtown Philadelphia, a few subway stops away. I can't remember the name of the paper, but one reported that he was rushed to the hospital and castrated immediately after his arrest. I did believe that such things had happened before to Black men in the USA, I didn't believe it happened to that particular Black man owing to his fame - or notoriety. The reason he was taken to the hospital, it was later reported, was because he had been shot and beaten by the NYC police. I assumed the paper printed the castration story to trigger a reaction, massive demonstrations or riots because I read that such fabrications before in some leftist rags. There was no such reaction in al-Amin's case, and I would learn to label this strategy as "voluntarism": It assumed that the will to revolt can overcome material conditions.
