Wiki - "During the Cristero War and the subsequent conflict, hundreds of
teachers were killed by Catholic militants who violently opposed the
government's secular education policies. These militants targeted rural
teachers for their role in implementing socialist education and for
challenging the influence of the Catholic Church. Some of these attacks
included extreme violence, such as lynching and mutilation."

The Church lost. Some priests who had taken up arms against the government
were executed. But the government made too many concessions.

The eleven year old where I stay came home from mass having just learned
about the Cristo War and the Christians who got their throats slit by the
communists. (He made the gesture) I said I didn't believe it and that he
should ask his teachers at school what they thought about the priest's
story.
