Was there a fifth column - a conspiracy or conspiracies of people who aimed to bring down the Soviet regime? It is a naive person who thinks there was none. So, did the fifth column include anyone who had earlier had a prominent place in the regime or the party? It is a naive person who thinks there were none. So, who were some of them? You would need to study the evidence.
