It's a sorry state of affairs when the NYT editors understand Trump better than does "the left", the majority of which in effect campaigned for him in 2024 by spending almost all their time attacking Biden and then Harris and ignoring Trump and MAGA. Even today, "the left" including the "socialist left" ignore the significance of Jan. 6 and Trump's general attack on democratic rights. I talked with a couple of young Mamdani supporters who dismissed democracy's importance. "Affordability" is all that matters, they said. Those young people should try talking to people in Syria or Ukraine or Palestine! Try talking with older black South Africans, who lived under apartheid... or older black Americans who lived under Jim Crow. Not that matters have been resolved in any of those cases, but democratic rights matter in and of themselves.
At the end of this editorial, they say that Jan. 6 was "an aberration". At first I disagreed. It was not in the sense that its roots lie deep in US history and culture. There have been race riots and other pogroms for centuries. But never before has a US president tried to overthrow the results of an election.... and then get reelected! The closest thing in US history was April 12, 1861, when the Confederacy started the US Civil War by attacking Ft. Sumter. That's a hell of a comparison.
