It's a visual representation of how much armed and other forms of resistance the US would face if it attempted to occupy the country. The Trump administration is aware that the Vietnam-Iraq-Afghanistan syndrome is very much alive in the US, including within its own MAGA base. But if there are no body bags coming home, the unlimited use of air and naval power to destroy infrastructure and kill civilians is much less politically threatening to Republican and Democratic administrations alike. The US leverages its air power and access to the world economy which it still dominates to maintain its empire.
