Yesterday's actions were partly a result of a call for national demonstrations against Trump's attack on Venezuela. The DSA, PSL, and others publicized it as that. At the same time, Indivisible called for demonstrations against ICE in Portland at multiple, named sites around the metropolitan area. Then the Venezuela demonstrations were re-christened as protests against Venezuela and ICE.
I have no idea why counterposing demonstrations happened or even if it were avoidable given Trump's multiple arenas of simultaneous attacks, but there are hardly any authoritative national voices for coordinating a response beyond the Democratic Party, in the case of Indivisible. There are no little-d democratic united-front organizations with leadership that goes well beyond the left groups that form them. National Peace Action Coalition had many unions along with independent civic and peace groups in the organization, and the People's Coalition for Peace and Justice had other independent groups like the Poor People's Campaign and War Resisters League. Although there was a split in the anti-vietnam War movement, NPAC and PCPJ would criticize the others' strategy and tactics, they at least didn't call competing actions for the same day. They had an independent leadership that went beyond left political groups. We need that today. Mark -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- Groups.io Links: You receive all messages sent to this group.
