This was in response to a spate of incidents where hijab-wearing Muslim women were singled out for racist abuse, harassment, and violence on the transit system. The #IllRideWithYou hashtag and volunteers stepping up<https://substack.com/redirect/b5897700-cc66-4224-9d30-1f3a388269c2?j=eyJ1IjoiNG9tMTZvIn0.Pd5JmculX3c9Cw2_c3e4xYaJrzIXTJ9TrPsSXGQ2cbc> soon spread across the country and to other countries experiencing similar problems with Islamophobia. This anti-fascist action had a lot more going for it than one might realize at first glance. It correctly identified a group of people being actively targeted and terrorized by bigots and fascists. It offered direct solidarity and support to the people being targeted without diminishing their own autonomy. It very publicly demonstrated how to use one’s one power and privilege to protect and support others. And it conspicuously took power away from the bigots and fascists whose Islamophobic terror campaign was designed to erase a racialized religious minority from public life. Another example: when transphobes and neo-nazis in Texas began targeting drag queen events with threats of terroristic violence and showing up armed at those events, the Elm Fork John Brown Gun Club (EFJBGC) offered to step in between the event attendees and organizers and the fascist terrorists. This Rolling Stone article<https://substack.com/redirect/39f9e568-8d68-41b7-99e7-de7f63328462?j=eyJ1IjoiNG9tMTZvIn0.Pd5JmculX3c9Cw2_c3e4xYaJrzIXTJ9TrPsSXGQ2cbc> outlines how the EFJBGC typically do their work only when invited by event organizers, who they confer with in advance and respect the guidelines and requests made of them by those organizers. Think about what’s happening in your own community, right now. What groups of people are being targeted for persecution because of the way they look, who they love, how they identify, what physical/mental barriers they face, how they practice their religious faith, or what their citizenship/migration status might be? Who is targeting them for persecution and how are they being targeted? How can you make contact with those facing persecution to offer your solidarity and support? How can you use your power, privileges, and resources to support them? One key caveat to this Antifa Action of the Month: “white savior complex” describes a pattern of behavior where people with a lot of power/privilege (and typically unexamined power/privilege) impose their “help” without respecting the wishes of those they are “helping,” or even receiving or accepting much input from the “helped.” The end result is that the people being “helped” and their experiences are ignored, invalidated, or sidelined, while the actions of the helpers is what’s centered/emphasized - all of which (ironically) amplifies inequality. DON’T DO THIS! One of our mentors in the anti-fascist movement approaches situations by making contact with the people being targeted for hate, telling them what resources he has available and what he’s able to do, and asking them what how they’d like him to support them. ASK THE QUESTION AND START FROM THERE! We all know (or can easily find out) who in our own communities are being targeted by fascists. We all have some degree of power, privileges, and resources we can offer up to those people in solidarity to help them push back against what they’re facing.
