The article cites work that says climate change may have resulted in a period 
of bad harvests that was the proximate cause of the rebellions. A dynasty that 
lasts hundreds of years probably has figured out how to exploit its peasantry 
without starving them or forcing them into open revolt. But then it collapses. 
Again, for many potential reasons. But a sequence of bad harvests changes the 
balance of power between the exploiter and the exploited, which could lead to a 
revolt. 

This all matters today with capitalism-caused global warming, which is already 
destroying farming in places around the globe and contributing to instability 
and massive human migration.
