Bardacke in this interview with Jane Slaughter: "Democratic unionism is essential to union strength. Open discussion and debate is essential to building the kind of unity that you need. The lack of democratic organization is what caused the downfall of the UFW."
Bardacke provides historical fact to prove that Chavez caused the downfall of the UFW. That is an examination how things moved. But Bardacke does not prove that lack of democracy caused the downfall. That is only a guess as to how things would have moved. Open debate does not necessarily result in unity. It can just as well lead to paralysis, fissures, or narrow selfishness. The historical evidence suggests that a strong union results from class-conscious, class-loyal leadership ... and the democracy that such leaders promote. Communists organized the United Auto Workers and led the sitdown strikes. See Roger Keeran's book, The Communist Party and the Auto Workers Unions. "Democracy" is like a Hare Krishna chant for democratic socialists, most Trotsky---s, and – tempered with opportunism – for liberals. -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- Groups.io Links: You receive all messages sent to this group.
