I was born and raised in Mobile, AL. I knew the intimidating terror of the Klan. I was raised a Catholic and was playing stick ball with a broomstick and a tennis ball. It was in right field that the ball went over my head. I chased it down and flung it back in when I noticed a white station wagon with 4 nuns in it. Thinking that they maybe needed directions I ran over to it but stopped with a start 50 or so feet from it it became clear that the nun in the drivers seat needed a shave.
I was 10 years old at a Mardi Gras parade when a white kid with a tray of peanuts came hawking his wares, "Pie-nuts, fresh roasted pie-nuts, 10 cents." A black kid next to me held out a dime to the vendor who asked, "Y'all want some pie-nuts?" The black kid said "Yassuh." 9th grade got acorns thrown at us and chased out when we attempted to integrate the downtown Mobile Main Library in '62 or '63. The last recorded lynching took place in Mobile in 1981. It was reported just yesterday that " ************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************* Trump’s DOJ claims SPLC funded the KKK. After a 1981 Alabama lynching, it bankrupted the Klan ( https://www.al.com/news/2026/04/trumps-doj-claims-splc-is-funding-the-kkk-after-a-1981-alabama-lynching-it-bankrupted-the-klan.html ) ************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************* * Updated: Apr. 27, 2026, 10:23 a.m. * | Published: Apr. 26, 2026, 7:51 a.m. I went on to more than 50 years of being in the struggles. Original member of the BSU at LACC in 1968. Arrested there in 1969. Beat the case with a hung jury. A black woman juror gave me a wink. Served 30 days for leading a protest at UCLA in 1972. Got out of jail on the 12th or 13th of September 1973. Missed my first daughter's first birthday on the 7th. Walked to the bus stop and espied the LA Times news rack headlining "Salvador Allende Dead." My stomach dropped in a thousand foot free fall. But I knew before then that the democratic struggle for human rights could not be won only by elections. I could go on cause I went on. In 1976 I stood between the RU and PLP at a protest against Moshe Dayan with 4 other members of the Socialist Collective, a black in fact, collection of around 10 to 15 (at times) group of communists that prevented, for a minute, the two silly mfers from snatching atr each others' throats. One or the other or both broke through our line and I tagged the biggest sob with all the power of my 135lbs. He was about to return the favor when my brother, Les Daniels (RIP) swung a cane across his head. Again, he barely blinked but...he went the other way. My brother always had my back. We went on. Fought against the LAPD's assault--tear gassed alongside my 7 year old granddaughter--on peaceful mainly migrant protestors in the May Day 2007 MacArthur Park rally. ( https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2007_MacArthur_Park_rallies ) Co-founded the Revolutionary Autonomous Communities-LA Free Food Program ( https://www.google.com/search?client=firefox-b-1-d&q=+Revolutionary+Autonomous+Communities-LA+Free+Food+Program+ ) in that park in November of that year helping--many times alongside that granddaughter--to at times distribute over 200 baskets of fresh, salvaged and donated foods. That program continues to this day every Sunday at the corner of Parkview and Wilshire Blv. I could go on cause I went on participating in many, if not most, of all of the varied events, movements, coalitions, etc until health and common sense stopped my active participation 7 years ago at the age of 71. Now, I can't go on cause I can't go on. Now what the fck have you done. That's a statement. Not a question. JAI -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- Groups.io Links: You receive all messages sent to this group.
