It doesn't really matter who is more or less "progressive" among the Democrats since there is a good possibility that none of them will be in the running for governor. That's because, as Charles pointed out, California has this ridiculous primary method which dispenses with political parties. Since there are about a half dozen or so Democrats running and only 2 Republicans, the Democratic vote will be split up, making it possible that these two Republicans will win the top 2 numbers of votes and go on to be the only 2 in the general election. (At present, #1 in the polls is a Republican and #2 is either Steyer or Becerra, depending on the poll you look at. #3 is the other Republican, who is ahead of #4 by a fairly wide margin.) Since Trump has now seized complete and uncontested control over the entire Republican Party and its elected officials (see primary results in Idaho), that means that if a Republican becomes CA governor we'll in effect have Trump running not only the federal government but also the government of the largest state in the country. I know that a lot of people on this list think that socialists should not differentiate between the two capitalist parties, meaning we should never vote for a Democrat. They are in effect saying that it doesn't matter if we live and organize under conditions of bourgeois democracy or under an authoritarian dictatorship which includes outright fascist elements. For those who reject that childish idea, then the only issue is which Democrat is likely to make it into the top two. (At this point, it seems pretty much a foregone conclusion that a Republican will be the #1 vote recipient in the primary but will be very unlikely to win the general 2 person election if he runs against a Democrat.)
Charles Keener mentions Butch Ware. He is a phony, even from a Putin-apologist point of view. He teaches at UC Santa Barbara. When pro-Palestine students were occupying a space on that campus back in 2024, Ware didn't even bother to stop by to say "hello", never mind participating.
