*Latin America: The War on Drugs and Trotsky's Theory of Permanent
Revolution*

The current era of global capitalism is marked by growing rivalry
between major imperialist powers. The US has ceased to be the hegemonic
power and consequently faces serious internal political crises, while
China has conquered markets that were previously dominated by the
Americans. Between these two poles are other imperialist powers such as
the European Union, the United Kingdom, Israel, Russia, Japan, and South
Korea, which also compete with each other.
One of the markets that China has managed to conquer since its rise as a
great power is Latin America, a region of semi-colonial countries that,
until the beginning of the 21st century, was completely controlled by US
imperialism. However, a series of left-wing, petty-bourgeois nationalist
movements offered the region an alternative, allowing them to loosen the
US yoke somewhat, at the cost of simultaneously having to endure the
yoke of Chinese imperialism, along with that of Russia. In this sense,
these movements, led by Castro-Chavismo, allowed the people of some
countries, such as Venezuela, Ecuador, Bolivia, Brazil, and Argentina,
for a time to have more room to maneuver in order to develop
economically. At the same time, they allowed Chinese imperialism to gain
a stronger foothold in the markets of other countries politically
dominated by the US, such as Mexico, Colombia, Chile, and Peru, where
China is the second or even the largest trading partner.
