------------ In 2017, British cultural theorist Mark Fisher began teaching a lecture course at Goldsmiths, University of London, titled Postcapitalist Desire. After delivering five lectures, he assigned students work in preparation for the sixth session, returned home and hanged himself. I admit that joking about such matters is inappropriate, but it strikes me as entirely unacceptable to suicide without finishing a university course. More importantly, however, what remained undelivered was, in my view, the most interesting lecture of all, entitled “The Destruction of Democratic Socialism and the Origins of Neoliberalism: The Case of Chile.” One can gain some sense of what Fisher intended to say from remarks he made during the introductory session and throughout the course, which have since been published in Russian. These ideas struck me as both profoundly important and deeply resonant, and I feel compelled to develop and carry them through to their conclusion. That is what I will attempt to do in this article.
