Contradictions surround Alex Saab’s case following deportation to US 9 junio, 2026 Tribuna Popular (Communist Party of Venezuela)
Jackeline López, a member of the Political Bureau of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Venezuela (PCV), questioned the Venezuelan government’s inconsistencies regarding the Alex Saab case. Saab is a businessman who was deported to the United States to face charges of alleged money laundering and corruption. During a press conference, López referred to a statement by the Administrative Service for Identification, Migration, and Foreigners (Saime) identifying Saab as a Colombian citizen after his transfer. «A few months ago, the Venezuelan government invested millions in the ‘Free Alex Saab’ campaign, yet today it presents him as a Colombian citizen,» the political leader stated. López recalled that Saab held positions within the Venezuelan public administration after returning to the country in December 2023. «How could a Colombian citizen hold ministerial positions in the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela?» asked López, demanding explanations about the government’s decisions regarding the businessman. The leader also questioned the references made by Venezuelan authorities to alleged «public and well-known facts» related to Saab, calling for the public to be clearly informed about the charges against him. «Venezuelans deserve to know what these ‘public and well-known facts’ are that they are now referring to,» she said. López noted that the official handling of the case has varied according to political needs. «One day someone is a hero, and the next day they are singled out. That double standard exposes a deep institutional and political crisis.” New indictment in the US Saab appeared before a federal court in the Southern District of Florida. According to U.S. prosecutors, the businessman is charged with conspiring to launder money related to the diversion of funds intended for public food programs and operations involving the irregular sale of crude oil from Petróleos de Venezuela (PDVSA). The indictment alleges that Saab participated in a scheme to secure contracts from the CLAP program by paying bribes to public officials and using shell companies, fraudulent invoicing, and false documentation to justify imports from Colombia and Mexico. >From contractor to key government figure Saab’s relationship with the Venezuelan government dates back to the binational housing agreements signed between Venezuela and Colombia during President Hugo Chávez’s administration. He later assumed a prominent role in the CLAP program’s supplier network. In 2019, U.S. authorities formally charged him with alleged money laundering. The following year, he was arrested in Cape Verde at Washington’s request, initiating a lengthy legal process that culminated in his extradition to the United States in October 2021. After facing criminal charges for more than two years, Saab was released in December 2023 as part of a prisoner exchange between Caracas and Washington. Upon returning to Venezuela, he was integrated into the government structure and held high-level positions until he was removed following the U.S. military operation on January 3 of this year. https://prensapcv.wordpress.com/2026/06/09/contradictions-surround-alex-saabs-case-following-deportation-to-us/ -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- Groups.io Links: You receive all messages sent to this group.
