I just learned about Mason a few weeks ago and with no experience with any Apache/perl. I went to my library and found the Mason book, which you can view on-line: http://www.masonbook.com/ There is a chapter on building a web site and a great discussion before that. Perhaps you can use their Chapter 8 as a model? In their code, they used only a few globals...things like the database and username. Most other things weren't global. Anyway, if you haven't read it already, it's worth a look.
