there is a fine example in rusty's Linux-2.4 NAT HOWTO.
you can find the url for it at http://netfilter.kernelnotes.org
there's also a netfilter mailing list where you could ask
questions about netfilter.
the source for the ipchains/ipfwadm modules come with the
new kernel but don't bother. just get iptables working for
you.
