DSL and cable modem providers sometimes have packet filters in the path. You
may actually not be able to ping anything.

Have you followed the HOWTO?
Can you access web sites through the masq server from the internal net?
What rules have you set up?
What is the output from 'ifconfig'?
What is the output from 'route -n'?
What is the output from 'ipchains -L -n'?
