Since they require access to the shadow'ed passwords, they need to be
recompiled or reconfigured for support for shadowing.  Converting a
standard box to a shadow one is a pain in the @$$ because many
applications (xlock, popper, etc) require recompilation.  You'd think that
libc would take care of stuff like that, but I'm sure there is a good
reason :)
